There is a distinct difference in both vernacular and performance when one speaks of caulks and sealants. These terms often are used interchangeably but they do not perform in the same manner.
Caulk V.S. Sealant
Caulks are typically used as a sealant for filling cracks or gaps around windows, doors, plumbing, and pipes. This prevents water, bugs, or air from entering your home our business. Caulk tends to spread onto adjacent surfaces and if outdoors it will weather differently than the rest of the seam. To prevent penetrations of moisture vapor into the walls, you should caulk all the joints in between trim and wall surfaces. The finish of a caulked surface usually looks more rigid.
Sealants are higher performing and function differently than a standard caulk. Sealants allow for movement between dissimilar materials which prevents incidental moisture and water out of the structure.
